Wadowice, with its stunning baroque architecture, is a charming town located 50 km to the west of Krakow. But apart from its architecture, the most important fact about Wadowice is that it is a hometown of a great Pole i.e. Karol Wojtyla, known as Pope John Paul II. Our trip to Wadowice starts with a visit to the flat in which John Paul II was born on 18th May 1920. This is where he had spent all his childhood till he moved to Krakow to study at college. The place was turned into museum soon after Karol Wojtyla had been elected the 263rd Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The next important point of the trip is a nearby church where he was baptised and then served as an altar boy. As a part of the tour you will also see Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sancturay - a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics and a park complex from the 17th century, placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. As a priest and then Pope, John Paul II loved to walk the paths of the sanctuary, which he found a great spiritual experience. |
